John A. Duvernay, 43

John A. Duvernay, 43, of Little Traverse Township, died Oct. 25, 1989, at Community Memorial Hospital, Cheboygan.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at the First Presbyterian Church, Petoskey. Pastor Gerald Blevins will officiate.

Mr. Duvernay was born Oct. 23, 1946, in Petoskey, the son of John E. and Patricia (Price) Duvernay. When he was 9 years old he played in the first year of organized Little League baseball in Petoskey.

He attended Petoskey schools and graduated from Petoskey High School in 1964. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1964 and served on the destroyer USS Davis. He was also stationed in Athens, Greece. Upon his discharge from the service, he rejoined the family business, Duvernay Signs. He has always made his home in the Petoskey area.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Petoskey; the Vietnam Veterans of America and the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 2462 in Petoskey.

John Elmer Duvernay Jr. 87

John Elmer Duvernay Jr., 87, of Little Traverse Township, died April 21, 2013, at Bortz Health Care of Petoskey.

John was born at the old Petoskey Hospital on Feb. 6, 1926, the son of John and Anna (Sherman) Duvernay.

He grew up in the Indian section of Petoskey referred to as "Hungry Hollow" in the book of the same name, written by his childhood friend, Bill Dunlop. John was proud of his Odawa heritage and received his LTBB tribal name M'konimwewidam (Bear Who Goes Away Speaking) in a ceremony in August 2004. He designed the original PHS Northmen logo in 1966 for the ninth-grade cheerleaders to show a respectful image of his heritage, and he later approved the modified logo we see today.

John ran track and played football, and was a member of the Petoskey High School class of 1944. He left school to join the Navy and was in both the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He received his diploma along with the PHS class of 2003.

While working on the Petoskey High School production of "HMS Pinafore," John met Pat Price and they were married on May 19, 1945, in Petoskey.

Patricia Ellen Duvernay

Patricia Ellen Duvernay, 87 of Little Traverse Township, died December 27, 2012 at the McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey.

Patricia was born on September 8, 1925 in Miami, FL, the daughter of Donald and Dorothy (Crane) Price. At a young age, her family moved to Harbor Springs and in 1943 moved to Petoskey, where Patricia graduated from High School in 1944.

She played in the Harbor Springs Marching Band and was involved in various musical productions. While working on the Petoskey High School production of HMS Pinafore, Patricia met John Duvernay and they were married on May 19, 1945 in Petoskey.

She went to work for Michigan Bell Telephone Company and in 1977, retired after a career spanning 35 years. She was a Life Member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and CWA Local 4106.

Her love for music and theater continued for the rest of her life. She sang in the church choir for over 60 years, and was a member of the Little Traverse Civic Theater for 30 years. Patricia was an early member of the Northern Michigan Chorale and played the trombone in the Harbor Springs Community Band until just a few years ago.

She loved gardening and was a lifelong Detroit Tigers fan.
