Our mother left her earthly family to begin her adventures with her heavenly family on Friday evening, November 27, 2015.

Beth Spencer Robison was born Tuesday, August 30, 1932, in Montpelier, Idaho, the daughter of Seymour Horne and Sarah Sophronia Quayle Spencer. She joined a loving family with two older sisters and a brother, Helen, Bob and Norma. When Beth was four, her mother passed away shortly after their youngest sister Joan was born. The Spencers are a musical family, and Beth developed and passed on a deep love for musical appreciation and performance.

The Spencer family moved to Fillmore, Utah, where Beth grew up, graduating with the Millard High School Class of 1950. During her high school years, she caught the eye of a young returned missionary, E Doyle Robison.  They were married on Thursday, August 30, 1951, in the Salt Lake Temple.

Mom and Dad raised their family in the east, making homes and friends in Ohio, New Jersey, Minnesota, Maryland, and New York, before returning to Utah. As she managed her home and raised her children, Mom continued her studies, culminating with the completion of a Master’s Degree from BYU in Recreational Management in 1986.

Mom’s life centered around service, in the home, church, and community. She served as Director of Project Read in Provo UT, Mission Mom for the England London Mission, Assistant Matron of the Stockholm Temple, LDS Employment Specialist, and volunteer in the Family History Library in Salt Lake City.

Autobiography

I was born at Cedar Fort, Utah, and when a young girl moved with my parents to Dingle, Idaho, where I was called to work in the Ward Sunday School, and Primary. Through the teachings of my parents, and the work in these organizations, I gained a testimony of the Gospel.

At the age of twenty-two I married Wm. Quayle, and about two years later I was called to serve as second counselor to Sister Lindsay in the Ward Y.L.M.I.A., and worked in that capacity for seven years; and then was appointed president of the organization and served seven years.

We moved to Montpelier, Idaho, in 1916, and in the same year I was called to labor as counselor to Sister Lissie Tueller, who was President of the First Ward Y.L.M.I.A. I also, served as a member of the Bear Lake Stake Y.L.M.I.A. Board from 1915 to 1917.

When the Montpelier Stake was organized, I was called by President Edward C. Rich to serve as counselor to Sister Agnes Pearce, President of the Stake Relief Society, and at that time was set apart by President Rich as chairman of the Red Cross work in connection with the Relief Society work. We distributed Red Cross material to all the Ward Relief Societies in the Bear Lake Stake for one and in the Montpelier Stake for a period of three years until it was discontinued after the signing of the armistice. I worked in the Relief Society until I moved to Salt Lake City in 1925.

In 1927 I became a member of the Seventeenth Ward and was called to serve as chorister in the Relief Society which position I held for three years. Also, served as a visiting teacher for eight years. In 1934 I was called, by Bishop Nicholas G. Smith, to do endowment work in the Salt Lake Temple; after six months Apostle George F. Richards called, and set me apart, to officiate in the temple ordinances where I worked for three years.

I married President Heber C. Austin, and moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho, and was there called by Bishop Warren Wright to serve as counselor to Sister Ruth Hart, Pres. of the Relief Society. I was released as counselor in October 1941, and am at present serving as a visiting teacher in this ward.

I was born, I was told at 4 am July 16th, 1888 in the two-story brick home of my parents situated on the Southwest Corner lot of Center street one block East of the main or business street. I was the eleventh child, sixth son and have a younger brother. Perhaps the early hour of my birth has influenced my appreciation of the early morning and made it less hard for me to arise early.

George Boardman Spencer

My father, George Boardman Spencer, suffered a severe case of small pox when upon his mission in Switzerland. This disease was so bad that his spirit left his body for a time and those attending him thought him dead. His spirit came to Utah and mingled with a group of people entering Temple Square. He was pushed to the fringe of the group; came up against the fence or wall of the enclosure. Here he seems to have been told that his earth life was unfinished and he must return and take his body. When his spirit reached his body in very brief time he found them preparing the body for burial. He stated it was repulsive for him to reenter his body and also painful, perhaps like starting the early type Ford after a cold night. The disease left deep pock marks on father's face so he thereafter wore whiskers. I never saw him when he did not have long, gray whiskers.

Norma Spencer Beckstrand

Our feisty, dynamic, wonderful wife, mother, and friend Norma Spencer Beckstrand passed away peacefully at her home on March 6, 2014. Norma was born on July 2, 1930 to Sarah Sophronia Quayle and Seymour Horne Spencer in Montpelier, Idaho. She grew up in Fillmore, Utah. From the day she was born, Norma hit the ground running. Before graduating from Millard High School in 1948, where she was co-valedictorian, she was the first Utah Girls' State Governor.

Norma married the love of her life, Gordon Lynn Beckstrand, on June 16, 1948 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They were always on the move, Norma working numerous jobs providing the financial resources necessary for Gordon to obtain his degrees, touching countless lives wherever they lived: Meadow, UT; Castle Dale, UT; Ithaca, NY; Madison, WI; Logan, UT; Richfield, UT; East Lansing, MI; Fort Collins, CO; Washington DC; Mogadishu, Somalia; Cairo, Egypt; Leeds, UT; Alpine, UT; and Lehi, UT.

Norma loved working as a realtor and assisted the LDS Church in purchasing the first mission home for the Lansing Michigan Mission in 1973. One of her greatest desires was to earn her college degree, which she did at age 55, with honors, from BYU in University Studies.

Norma spent her life serving others. She directed, managed, and produced innumerable community and church productions such as "Oliver" and "The Stingiest Man in Town." She served in the LDS Young Women's program for 42 years; culminating with her 7th time as ward Young Women's president at the age of 72. She and Gordon served four LDS missions together: Co-Directors, St. George Member Locator Center; Guides, St. George Historical Sites;Coordinators, St. George Temple Baptistry; Missionaries, St. George Temple Visitors' Center.

Ivins, UT - Robert (Bob) William Spencer, age 83, passed away Tuesday, December 28, 2010, at his home in Ivins, UT. He was born March 9, 1927, in Montpelier, ID, to Seymour Horne and Sarah Sophronia Quayle Spencer. Bob married Audrey Jeanette Sparks on September 8, 1952, in the Salt Lake Temple. After losing his mother at the age of nine, Bob’s father moved his young family to Fillmore, UT, where Bob and his sisters spent the remainder of their childhood. He served in the military with an honorable discharge and later served a mission in Toronto, Canada. Bob attended BYU for two years and also attended the University of Utah for one year. Bob and Audrey made their first home in Salt Lake City and later moved to Bountiful. He was a member of the LDS church and actively served in many positions, including twelve years as an ordinance worker in the Salt Lake Temple.

Bob started playing the trumpet in dance bands at the age of fourteen. He also played the trombone and enjoyed singing. He loved his profession as a part-time musician and continued to play and sing most of his life. His work as a manufacturer’s representative required a lot of travel. In order to be home more, Bob consulted with his family and decided to purchase laundromats.

He is survived by: his loving wife, Audrey; 5 daughters, Jan (Doug) Weaver of Grand Junction, CO, Terri Tchernoivanov of Gilbert, AZ, Laurie Spencer of Salt Lake City, UT, Kelly (Mike) Angus of Roosevelt, UT, Sara (Bryce) Cook of Mesa, AZ; son, Craig (Donna) Spencer of St. George, UT; 12 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and 3 sisters, Norma (Gordon) Beckstrand of Alpine, UT, Beth (Doyle) Robison of Highland, UT, and Joan (Claire) McKee of St. George, UT. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Helen Spencer Whatcott.

Sarah Sophronia Quayle was born March 13, 1899 in Dingle, Idaho to William Quayle and Elizabeth Ann Dayton. She was the second child, the first daughter, of six children. There were four girls and two boys. Her older brother, William Earl Quayle died when he was 21 on September 6, 1918. And her only other brother, the baby of the family, died when he was only a month old in July 1908. Sophronia’s nickname was “Phron.” She was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on August 22, 1908.

Sophronia went to Paris High School for two years after graduating from the eighth grade. But when her family moved to Montpelier, Idaho, she refused to go to high school there so she got a job in Mose Lewis’ Dry Goods store. She was engaged to Roland Rudd at this time.

She then went to Salt Lake to study vocal with Professor Lund. He was the director of the Tabernacle Choir at this time.

She then went on a mission to California when she was nineteen. She broke her engagement while serving her mission.

Sophronia married Seymour Horne Spencer March 11, 1925. They had five children: Helen Jean born 17 February 1926, Robert William born 9 March 1927, Norma born 2 July 1930, Beth born 30 August 1932, and Margaret Joan born 22 May 1936. All these children were born in Montpelier, Idaho.

Sophronia Spencer died June 8, 1936, just two weeks after Joan was born, in Montpelier, Idaho. She was buried June 11th in Paris, Idaho.
