Deseret News, Sunday, July 12, 2020:

E Doyle Robison
1927 ~ 2020

Our wonderful father returned home to join his wife and family Wednesday afternoon, July 8th, 2020. He was 93.

E Doyle Robison was born in Fillmore, Utah, May 31, 1927, the fourth son of Aaron Wayne and Fern Ashby Robison.

He attended Fillmore schools and served in leadership of the class of '45. He also ran the mile for the Millard High Eagles, anchoring the medley relay team.

Just 28 days after his graduation from Millard High School he enlisted in the Navy, serving 13 months, learning to be a radar technician.

Four months after his discharge, Dad began a three-year mission to Sweden. During his mission, he served as President of the Härnösand Branch and of the Sundsvall District.
Upon his return to Fillmore, he met Beth Spencer. After a two-year courtship, they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple, on August 30, 1951. Together, they enjoyed 64 grand years full of family, service and adventures. She preceded him in death on November 27, 2015.

Applying the study habits he had developed in the Navy, Dad graduated with honors from BYU June 2, 1952 and with a Masters of Science in Retailing, from NYU on June 11, 1952.

Dad went into retailing and marketing, taking him on trips around the world, and establishing relationships with leaders in the industry. The capstone of his career was launching Skagg's Institute of Retail Management at BYU in 1976. During his career he moved his growing family to Ohio, New Jersey, Minnesota, Maryland, New York and Utah.

Dad was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many positions and was called to serve as President of the England London Mission from 1991 – 1994. He and mom served other missions together, including one to the Stockholm Temple and another to the Family History Library in Salt Lake. He also enjoyed the opportunity to serve as a sealer and as a stake patriarch.

Dad is survived by his five children – Catherine (Dale) Johnson, Linda (Jeff) Woodworth, Kevin (Kaye Cronquist), Stephen (Darby Howse), and Jeffrey (Kimberly Tucker); his brother, Richard (Mary Meitl) Robison; and his sisters-in-law, Joan (Clair) McKee; and Audrey Spencer; 23 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Dad was also preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers, Ashby, Ray and Duane.

Due to restrictions because of Covid-19, a private graveside service will be held. In lieu of flowers, Dad would like donations be made to the General Mission Fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Our family would like to thank Trina and the entire staff at the Memory Care Facility at the Sheridan in South Jordan for their consistent, tender care and service for our father which surpassed all our expectations.

Obituary:

Arnold Leroy Howse, loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, completed his mortal probation Saturday, June 18, 2016 at his home in Orem, Utah surrounded by half of his twelve children. He won the battle against a fast-growing glioblastoma, surpassing the doctor's expectations by five months.

Arnold was born Friday, December 5, 1941 at his parent's house on Third street in Harbor Springs, Michigan, the youngest of three children and only son of Clifford Leroy Howse and Gertrude Caroline Catob.

As a youth, Dad quickly showed his musical aptitude, taking up the trumpet at the suggestion of the band director, Joseph Jezisek. He played in a dance band and marched in parades as a band member for most of his life. In high school he also played football and was active in other school activities.

It was at High School in band class that he met his future wife, Joanne Marie Heinz. They were married in the Presbyterian Church at Harbor Springs on Friday, September 18, 1959. Together they shared their love of music with their children and community.

Arnold became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1963 shortly before his graduation from college. He became a biology teacher at Carrollton High School in Saginaw and later taught at  East Jordan High School. He and mom nurtured the gospel in Northern Michigan, where he eventually became Branch President and then the first Bishop of the Petoskey ward.

During the summer, Arnold worked as a fudge maker at Crump's Candies in Harbor Springs. In 1974 Arnold became the owner of the candy store and changed the name to Howse's Candy Haus. He retired from teaching and introduced Northern Michigan style fudge around the country, eventually opening shops in Provo, Utah, DelRay Beach, Florida and finally in Park City, Utah. His son Christopher, now runs the candy store in Harbor.

Joanne passed away in 2006.

Arnold married Janis Heiner on February 6, 2009 in Orem, Utah. Together they adopted Janis' grandson, Taygan.

Our mother left her earthly family to begin her adventures with her heavenly family on Friday evening, November 27, 2015.

Beth Spencer Robison was born Tuesday, August 30, 1932, in Montpelier, Idaho, the daughter of Seymour Horne and Sarah Sophronia Quayle Spencer. She joined a loving family with two older sisters and a brother, Helen, Bob and Norma. When Beth was four, her mother passed away shortly after their youngest sister Joan was born. The Spencers are a musical family, and Beth developed and passed on a deep love for musical appreciation and performance.

The Spencer family moved to Fillmore, Utah, where Beth grew up, graduating with the Millard High School Class of 1950. During her high school years, she caught the eye of a young returned missionary, E Doyle Robison.  They were married on Thursday, August 30, 1951, in the Salt Lake Temple.

Mom and Dad raised their family in the east, making homes and friends in Ohio, New Jersey, Minnesota, Maryland, and New York, before returning to Utah. As she managed her home and raised her children, Mom continued her studies, culminating with the completion of a Master’s Degree from BYU in Recreational Management in 1986.

Mom’s life centered around service, in the home, church, and community. She served as Director of Project Read in Provo UT, Mission Mom for the England London Mission, Assistant Matron of the Stockholm Temple, LDS Employment Specialist, and volunteer in the Family History Library in Salt Lake City.

Day, Stella H., ed. Builders of Early Millard, pp. 603-605:

FRANKLIN ALONZO ROBISON
AND
ISABELLA ELEANOR MARDEN PRATT ROBISON

Franklin Alonzo Robison was born at Crete, Will County, Illinois on July 29, 1851, son of Joseph and Lucretia Hancock Robison. In March or April 1854, when Lonny, as he was called, was two years old, the family was finally ready to cross the plains to come to Utah. The whole family had worked long and hard to prepare for the long trek. The family consisted of the father and mother and ten children. An older brother was married and was against the move to Utah, so he stayed behind, and never did come to Utah. The second son, Benjamin, was 23 and was also married and had a son. The others were Joseph V., 21, Alvin, 20, Henry, 17, Lucretia, 13, Proctor, 11, Almon, 9, Albert, 7, Adelia, 5, and Lonnie, 2. They had seven wagons, four with horse teams and three with oxen. Among their loose cattle they had some milk cows, yet some of the cows they milked they worked under the yoke as oxen. Theirs was one of the best equipped Mormon Companies that crossed the plains and they traveled in unusual comfort for that time. They arrived in Utah in the late summer, 1854.

When they reached Salt Lake, Brigham Young asked them to go down and settle in Fillmore, Millard County, Utah. The people had to live in a fort to protect themselves from the Indians. Joseph and the boys helped build the fort. They lived in the fort eight or ten years.

Joseph acquired property in the town. He divided it and gave each of his sons a lot so they could build homes. Lonnie, being younger, didn't get a lot, so he proceeded to take up a lot of his own. When his father found out what he was doing he gave him a lot. Lonnie was engaged to marry a young lady by the name of Sarah Prisby. she died. Later he started to keep company with a girl by the name of Isabella Eleanor Pratt, who came to Fillmore to teach school. They were married April 10, 1872 in Salt Lake in the Endowment House.

Isabella Eleanor Marden Pratt Robison was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, September 1, 1854 to Parley P. and Belinda Marden Pratt. Her father was killed when she was 2 or 3 years old. She grew up and attended schools in Salt Lake City. Her home was on what is now Richards Street across the road from the south gate of Temple Square. She started to teach primary age children when she was only 12 years old, thus earning her first wages. At the age of 15 she taught the Primary School at the University of Deseret. Her tuition was paid by her teaching; she also got her teacher's training at the same time.

HELEN VENERA McBRIDE BROWN COLGROVE

by Fern Robison, granddaughter

Helen Venera McBride was born February 22, 1833 at Villenova, New York, the oldest child of Reuben and Mary Ann McBride. When she was a year old her parents moved to Kirtland, Ohio, where her father spent much of his time doing church work, as he had been called for a minute man. When Helen was seventeen her father went in company with President Young to Utah. Two years later he returned to Kirtland to bring his family to the Great Salt Lake Valley. When they arrived they lived in Farmington and Springville. Sometime later they moved to Fillmore as her father was called to settle there by Brigham Young.

Helen married Samuel Brown July 6, 1854. To this union two children were born: Florence Melissa, and Samuel. She was very happy with her family, though they were quite poor and she was obliged to go without many necessities.

In October, 1856, the sad news came to her that her husband and Josiah Call had been killed by Indians. They were returning from the north when they were attacked by Indians on Chicken Creek Hill. They were shot, scalped and hung by their feet in a cedar tree. After this the Indians cut their throats and tied a red handkerchief around Samuel's neck.

When her husband was killed Helen did not have flour in her bin, wood to burn, or money to buy the things needed for her little family. During the lonely years that followed she spend most of her time at the ranch, later known as Almon Robison's ranch, milking cows and making butter and cheese to sell. Most of the time she walked to town carrying her produce so she could sell it.

After she had lived as a widow for thirteen years, she was married to Harley I. Colgrove on December 12, 1860 in Salt Lake City by Joseph F. Smith. To this union three children were born: Lester, Minnie and Eugene. Harley Colgrove served in the Civil War in "Company A" in the 20th Illinois Infantry.

Alonzo Franklin Robison (1873-1949) Biography

A SHORT HISTORY OF THE LIFE OF

as told by his son Aaron Wayne Robison to his grandson Wayne Ashby Robison

Included in History & Genealogy of the Franklin Alonzo Robison Family
compiled by Carrie Robison Despain and Melba Despain Garner in 1960

Alonzo Franklin Robison was born Jan. 16, 1873 in Fillmore, Utah as the oldest of twelve children to Franklin Alonzo And Isabella Eleanor Pratt Robison. He was baptized 2 Jun 1881. He lived in Fillmore most of his life except when business ventures took him to Idaho, Arizona or other parts of Utah.

While still a young man he made various trips into Arizona to help move his father and Aunt Lois and their family there and also to take dried fruit for sale. The sale of this fruit provided funds with which to maintain the family. On one of these trips he was riding his horse, trying to find a crossing of one of the rivers. He entered the river, but the stream was swift and the water was deep. He was separated from his horse. His horse crossed the river and came out on the other side. He couldn't swim, but he floated down the stream on his back. His father tried to reach him from one trail into the river, but he floated by before his father could reach him. He finally caught in some bushes and held on until his father could rescue him.

Letter

                                                Los Angeles  Jan 2nd 1929

My Dear Sister Thelma and family.

Your very dear and welcome letter arrived some day ago and was so glad to here from you and to here the children were doing so well in school.

I arrived here the day before Christmas and Paul and Evelyn have kept me going all through the holiday week until I am nearly worn out.

Oh! Such a wonderful time they have shown me. We started out Xmas day to Holywood to see the beautifully decorated christmas trees which there were miles of  Also went to the chineas Theatre which is considered the most wonderful theatre in the world. In going in you see the imprints in the walks of all the most famous stars with some inscription.

Then we returned home and pertook of a wonderful dinner. We also visited the old spanish mission and patio.

Sunday we went out to Exposition park and visited the museum, coliseum and the big forestry building and there was wonderful band music all around.

It is like being in a new and beautiful world alltho it is said there is a good deal of crime and wickedness here.

New Years day They took me out to Pasidena to see the Tournament of Roses Parade which was the most unique and wonderful or beautiful sight I ever saw or expect to see. There was two hours and a half of floating floats of roses and flowers with 28 bands in uniforms to to acompanying them. Some ot the float were estimated to cost $2000. There we[re] 800,000 people there

Pasidena itself is like Paridise such beautiful homes parks and buildings and trees and flowers. If I could talk to you then I could have [you] know how much I have enjoyed myself.

I do not expect to stay much longer as home is calling and Evelyn and Paul must settle down to their life of work and business.

The father was born in Massachusetts and the mother Utah, but both took up their residence in Bear Lake county, Idaho, many years ago. In 1849 George B. Spencer crossed the plains to Utah, where he worked at farming and later acquired a tract of land, which he operated until 1874, when he removed to Bear Lake county, Idaho. Here he made a desert entry, and bought land which he improved and cultivated, operating the same place ever since. He now lives practically retired having reached the age of eighty years. Obituary

Saltas, John. Private Eye, February 19, 1991, page 3:
J Spot Collateral Damage
I don't remember exactly when or where I met Woody. In 1972, I had just graduated from high school and had taken fold with a number of latent hippies, party-monsters, long-hairs, ragamuffins, pool shooters, quasi peace-niks, and hemp philosophers, all of whom where - and remain - remarkably great people. Woody was part of that group. At just 18, and bearer of a low draft lottery number, I did what most sane males in my situation did: I enrolled in college. Armed with the advice of two older brothers who had served in Viet Nam - both decorated - two more who were in the service but not sent there, and the nasty reports from several friends who saw the Ho Chi Minh Trail up close and personal, college did indeed seem prudent. But when Woody had left his high school in Fillmore just a few years earlier, the military likely was not only a ticket out of small-town Utah but a very honorable option. He joined the Marines and served two tours in Viet Nam. With one of the best beards on the planet and a head of hair that rivaled Sampson's, Woody hardly seemed a battle-hardened vet. His gentle, peaceful demeanor and low-caliber temper certainly masked any inner terror. The incongruity was that while most of us pretended to be peace-loving hippies, Woody, the Nam vet, came closest to the real thing. He passed the time as a surveyor, played some tennis, and had a fantastic cacti collection. He loved animals and children, caring for both with a tenderness not usually associated with a large man. His favorite phrases were "wow" and "hey, man," spoken with perfect softness. Woody was not loose with heroic tales of battle. He wore his medals in his heart and in his conscience, not in the puffs of smoke of macho barroom talk. However, as any Viet Nam historian or veteran can tell you, to be a Marine in Viet Nam circa 1967-1969, as Woody was, was not a very healthy place to be. Woody served his country honestly and honorably, but his Viet Nam experience haunted him every day and every night. Some of his high-school friends did not come home alive; Woody, some would often say, simply did not come home. In the few times he talked of Viet Nam, his tales were always horrifying. I don't remember the date or place (a Marine would know), but in a major battle, Woody's unit charged up a valley only to be inflicted with 80% casualties before the battle ended - something like 300 killed or wounded. His worst tale, though, was this: At one base camp, some "soul brothers" were in their tent listening to some "soul music" and "just jiving." Somebody, an American who didn't like "soul brothers," tossed a phosphorous grenade or molotov cocktail into their tent, lighting the tent and the men inside. Reacting to their screams, other men attempted to douse the tent with water from the fire buckets. Trouble was, someone, apparently in junction with the grenade tosser, had filled the water buckets with gasoline. The "soul brothers" all died. In the jargon of today's feel-good military speak, those men were Collateral Damage. So was Woody. Outside of his penchant for collecting guns and shooting them - at targets - not much military remained of Woody after Viet Nam except his deep pride, his "Soldier of Fortune" magazines, and his distaste for war. He was hurt and confused when he returned home to an ungrateful America, and by the poor treatment he and his fellow vets received. If anyone ever epitomized the spirit of "love the troops-hate the war" it was Woody, and despite knowing what he knew, he'd do it again. Frank Wayne "Woody" Robison died February 4, 1991, at home. KIA. Peace at last. We miss you, Woody. You were and are a hero.
